The launch of Leitrim Flood Appeal took place in The Leitrim Marina Hotel, Leitrim Village last Saturday, Dec. 5th. The event was strongly attended by locals and well wishers nationwide.

St. Vincent de Pauls Chairperson, Micheal Duignan said “He was delighted that this appeal was formed to facilitate the needs of our county at this traumatic time” and offered their assistance in any way possible.

Cllr. Enda Stenson praised the members of Leitrim Flood Appeal for their energy, enthusiasm and their capabilities to pull together this localised appeal so quickly in what is a devastating time for our county.

Secretary of the appeal Máire Canning expressed the need for people to nominate others as people are often too proud to ask for help and stressed that in no way did the charity or its members wish to allocate blame or get political. She hoped that the launch of the website would provide an informative base for our friends abroad who might like to help or donate. http://www.leitrimfloodappeal.com

Photographer and musician, David Knight was responsible for the captivating pictorial display and DVD screening of the recent flooding throughout Leitrim. Supporters expressed an element of shock and one viewer commented “that people have a tendency to forget as the flood waters recede”. David also announced that all proceeds from the sale of his featured pictures will go directly to the Leitrim Flood Appeal.

Pinch of Snuff, local traditional Irish musicians, who have supported the appeal from the onset stated that “everybody should pull together at this time and that the success of the appeal would depend on everybody spreading the word and supporting Leitrim Flood Appeal’s upcoming events where possible”.

Members of the committee were available all night to answer questions, accept further donations, enlist volunteers and meet with people whose homes were damaged and also ensured that they will start delivering funds before Christmas on a need basis.

Chairman of Leitrim County Council, Thomas Mulligan, who had meet with President Mary McAleese earlier that day said “President McAleese had full praise for all fundraising and charity organisations at this crucial time and in particular The Leitrim Flood Appeal”

Significant donations were received from The North West Vintage and Heritage Club represented by Frank McGowan, Fergus Mayo and Hughie Guighan. The club members felt it was extremely important for them to be represented that night as they felt it would encourage other clubs and organisations to fundraise and donate proceeds to this appeal. The South Leitrim Harriers representative Sharon Garland also made a significant donation and wished the appeal continued success and support.
